Lung Cancer Treatment
Lung cancer Treatment,medical therapies,
such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and palliative care,
alone, or in combination, in an attempt to cure or lessen the
lung cancer.
In recent years, various molecular, targeted therapies, have been
developed, for the treatment, of advanced lung cancer.
Gefitinib (Iressa) is one such drug, which targets the tyrosine
kinase domain, of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR),
expressed in many cases, of non-small cell lung cancer.

Chemotherapy
For clinical and treatment purposes, most oncologists tend to
classify lung cancer into two major groups, namely small cell
lung cancer(SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
This is done because of differing responses to treatment -
non-small-cell-cancer is comparatively less sensitive to
chemotherapy and/or radiation,
so surgery is the treatment of choice in these tumors.
small-cell-cancer, in contrast, usually initially responds well
Spread
to chemotherapy and/or radiation, but has usually
metastasized,(spread), widely by the time it is discovered,
making surgery ineffective.
It is estimated, that approximately, 80% of cancer patients,
in the U.S. have non-small cell cancer. (NSCLC),
while approximately, 15%, have small cell cancer (SCLC).
non-small cell cancer
It is estimated, that approximately, 80% of cancer patients, in
the U.S. have non-small cell cancer. (NSCLC),
while approximately, 15%, have small cell cancer (SCLC).
Patients diagnosed, with cancers, in these two groups are
treated,in most cases, according to guidelines
derived, and published, by consensus of expert panels after
review of clinical trial and meta-analytic data,
treatment, that recognizes, and incorporates, newly
discovered associations between particular histologic subtypes
of cancer, and molecular, oncogenetic, mutations, and pathways,
helping to drive, their malignant, phenotypes.
