Meningitis

Meningitis,can strike, at, any, age, but, it is on, the rise,

for teenagers, and college-aged, students,

The number, of outbreaks, among, young ,adults, 15, to 24, years,

of age, has, nearly, doubled, since, 1991,

The bacterium, is present, in respiratory, secretions,

and can, be spread, by coughing, or sneezing,

It is, also,spread, by sharing, eating, utensils,

water, bottles, cigarettes, and kissing,


Serious condition


It is an infection,of the, fluid ,around, the brain,

and, in, the spine, can, be, a very, serious, condition,

At times, it is deadly,

Many, people, are, still, unaware, of this condition,

and how, dangerous, it can be,

Children, with, meningitis, usually, have, a high, fever,

headache, loss of appetite, and drowsiness, or irritability,

They, may, complain, that, the light, hurts, their, eyes,

They, may, have, a stiff, neck,

Small, babies, may ,have, a bulging, fontanel, (soft spot),

Children, with meningitis, may become, increasingly, confused,

drowsy, and may develop, fits, (convulsions),

or go, into coma ,(unconscious),


Infected


You, can, get, viral, from, someone,

who is infected,

This, can,happen, by shaking, hands, with, an infected, person,

by touching, something, the person, has, handled,

and then, rubbing, your, own ,nose, mouth, or eyes,

or by sharing, drinking, glasses,

Routine, immunization,can go, a long way, toward, preventing,

meningitis, The vaccine, meningitis, caused by these

microorganisms.


Contagious


The disease, is, contagious, and can, be very, serious,

with long-lasting, damage,

to the brain, central, nervous, system, and the rest, of the body

There,are, several, vaccines, available, which, help, preventing,

meningitis, thus one is often, worried, about, the side effects,


Treatment


Treatmen,t depends, on the severity, of the symptoms,

Treatment, is the, same, as for any viral, infection,

and may, include, supportive, care, such, as resting, keeping,

warm, and comfortable, and drinking, plenty, of fluids,

You, can, prevent, the spread ,of many viral, infections,

by using, a handkerchief, and washing, your, hands,

thoroughly after, using, the toilet,

You should, also ,avoid, close, contact, sneezing,

and coughing, over other, people, if you, have a viral, infection,


Damage


The action, of infectious, agents, on the, brain, tissue,

is one, direct, cause, of damage,

Other, types, of damage, may be, due, to the mechanical, effects,

of swelling, and compression, of brain tissue ,against, the bony,

surface, of the skull,

Swelling, of the meringues, may interfere, with the normal,

absorption,, of CSF by blood vessels, causing, accumulation,

of CSF and damage from the resulting, pressure, on the brain,

Interference, with the brain's, carefully, regulated, chemical,


Inflammation


Common, symptoms, in people, over ,the age, of two, include,

high fever, headache, and stiff neck.

Bacterial meningitis is less common ,than viral,

in which, the inflammation, is caused, by a viral, infection,
